How to Set Goals That Truly Inspire You
There is a specific pattern I see often enough to name: someone sets a sensible goal, works at it seriously for two or three weeks, and then stops — and cannot explain why, because on paper nothing went wrong.
Almost always, the goal belonged to someone else.
Borrowed goals
They come from a parent, a peer group, an industry, or a version of yourself from eight years ago who has since changed their mind. They look right. They survive scrutiny, because they are the kind of thing a reasonable person would want.
What they do not do is generate any pull. So they run on discipline alone, and discipline is a finite resource that gets spent on the first difficult week.
How to tell
Three questions, asked honestly:
- Who would be disappointed if I dropped this? If the answer is a person rather than you, look harder.
- Would I still want this if nobody ever found out I had done it? Not a trick question. Some goals are legitimately about recognition. But you should know which ones.
- What was I doing the last time I lost track of the afternoon? Whatever that was, it is data.
Rewriting one
You rarely have to abandon a borrowed goal entirely. More often there is a real thing underneath it that has been badly translated.
“I should start a business” often turns out to be “I want to decide what I work on.” Those have very different plans attached, and only one of them requires quitting your job.
“I want to run a marathon” is sometimes “I want a reason to be outdoors for an hour a day.” Same activity, completely different target, and the second one does not collapse if your knee goes.
Do the translation before you plan. It takes one honest hour and it is the difference between a goal that runs on interest and one that runs on willpower.
Then make it small
Once it is genuinely yours, apply the usual discipline: name the first visible change, write conditions you control, put a date on it, and schedule the review. A goal that is yours and specific will beat one that is impressive and borrowed every time.
